I didn't know if anyone uses this fantastic little piece of software but with these frequent updates I have found this to be quite helpful:

Magic Launcher allows you to "dynamically load mods" without changing the minecraft.jar. It also uses profiles so you can have an SMP profile with just optifine and different SSP profiles with a few mods or every mod you can throw at it.
The best part is that you can use different .jars with those differing profiles! So with every update I simply rename the old jar according to its version, back up the .minecraft folder with the version number as well, and then update. Because not only can you specify the .jar, you can also specify the base folder (which .minecraft folder) in the Advanced menu!! In addition you can specify memory allocation and the java folder.
For added awesomeness I use a portable version of MC I found on demonoid in which I just changed the batch file to run MagicLauncher instead of MC.exe and I can run it from within Dropbox so that my game is always synchronized between the several computers that I play on.
Try Magic Launcher, let me know what you think, and do like I did and drop the dev a couple rickies.
Magic Launcher ftw
