Contingency Evaluation Report

As you guys know we backup the server in quite a few different ways. It is important when performing regular backups to also test that these backups are being done properly and that they work and restore correctly.

There are three things that we backup every day. And I'd like to list those below.
  • 1. The servers boot drive where the Operating system is.
    2. The servers SSD Drive where our Minecraft servers live.
    3. The MySQL Database where our Logblock & Core Protect databases are stored.
So as I do every month I verified all these backups were being performed regularly and that the backups work. I decided to detail this evaluation in this thread so that you can all be reassured the backups we have are actually being taken and their contents verified.

I'd like to elaborate on the 2nd note above. When we backup the SSD that our Minecraft servers live on we actually keep each individual backup that is performed for a period of 90 days. That means if I were to look at only those SSD backups right now there would be 90 separate backups each one around 14 to 16GB in size. The MySQL and Boot drive backups however are not like this, only one backup is ever stored (the most recent one) due to the size of those backups. Our MySQL database alone is over 100GB in size so saving many different versions of that is unfeasible. The same is true of our C Drive which has over 200GB of data on it.

Thanks for reading and happy gaming.
